Refractive surgery consists of several different procedures. The most popular and most performed is LASIK.

The goal of each procedure is to change the way images are focused in your eye. Dr. Burcham began doing refractive surgery in 1984 when it was first introduced, and is very experienced in each type of refractive surgery. He is Board Certified and has been helping people in the Denver Metro area and around the world (through his voluntary mission surgery to Third World Countries) improve their vision for over 25 years. He will help you choose the most appropriate procedure to help you reach your goals.

iLASIK is the most technology advanced type of LASIK offered today. It is an all laser, Intralase method – it is 100% blade free. iLASIK combines the Intralase method of a laser flap and CustomVue treatment. It is so advanced that it is even recommended by NASA as the treatment of choice for their astronauts.

Instead of using a blade, the iLASIK uses a fentosecond laser that emits tiny, rapid pulses of laser light to create your corneal flap. Each pulse of light passes through your cornea and forms a microscopic bubble at a specific depth and position within your eye that is determined by Dr. Burcham. The laser moves back and forth across the eye, creating a uniform layer of bubbles just beneath your corneal surface. Dr. Burcham will then gently separate the tissue and fold back the flap during the LASIK treatment.

Dr. Burcham recommends that all of his patients who qualify elect for the CustomVue LASIK. Traditional LASIK and CustomVue involve many of the same guidelines and pre-surgery diagnostic tests. However, the CustomVue procedure also uses advanced Wave Scan Technology. The Wave Scan enables the physician to measure as never before and improve, the unique imperfections in each individual’s vision. This enables the surgeon to achieve each person’s “personal best vision”

Wave Scan technology was originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. This technology has now been applied to laser vision correction. It does so by measuring imperfections in the eye surface. This has never been possible to measure before using standard methods for glasses or contact lenses. Wave Scan based digital technology identifies and measures imperfections in an individual’s eye 24 times more precisely than the standard method. This allows a custom treatment to be used for your laser vision correction.
